Morbid boy
It’s a tough pill to swallow, prescribed by a child,
in the Post Office queue, cold and single filed.
I noticed the glare as he strangled his toy,
the foreteller of doom, we’ll call Morbid Boy.
His Mother was distant with curious ease,
a maternal divorce for celebrity sleaze.
I stooped down to do what his Mother did not
and offered some interest that she’d since forgot.
“Why strangle your toy? That’s not how to play.”
Fulfilling my citizenship for the day.
Then I was disturbed by what the boy said,
“Everyone’s dying, everyone else is dead.”
I stood shocked and puzzled, wearing a frown,
bemused by a boy on my way into town.
It didn’t seem right a future so cruel
should be known by a child in primary school.
The boy was so dark, but not quite so wise,
he’d focused too much on the human demise.
I gave an idea that he’d not forget,
“We may all be dying, but we’re not dead yet.”
The world may be harsh, and we can’t pretend
to enter a life and not meet an end.
Life is for living, so don’t think of death.
There’s still life to live if you’re drawing breath.
in the Post Office queue, cold and single filed.
